Hit the jump for more on Irvin’s commitment.

Irvin was offered in mid-May when the Wolverines were making a bunch of offers within the Peach State. He spent some time living in Detroit as a child, and the commitment was a result of wanting to return home to play. He committed to the Wolverines when he attended the satellite camp in Atlanta on Thursday.

Irvin has some good qualities to develop. He played his junior year at a pretty light weight for a lineman (245 lbs. or so), but he has skinny lower legs and an ability to move well. He’s light on his feet, can pull, and can latch onto second-level defenders. He’s very quick off the ball and he moves his feet after contact.

The #1 question mark is about his size and strength. He’s up to about 270 lbs., but he needs to continue growing and getting stronger. His highlights are littered with plays where he gets stalemated at the point of attack, albeit by pretty large players in their own right. Occasionally, he stops his feet right before contact, which doesn’t help with that aforementioned criticism. It’s also unclear whether he will be able to maintain his quickness as he adds weight, but based on his body makeup, I don’t think that will be a major issue. I would like to see him finish his blocks with a little more aggression, but that may come once he gets bigger and stronger.

Overall, I like Irvin. He’s an athletic lineman, and I like guys who are athletic and can grow into being bulky. Sometimes guys who grow up big and clunky can never get around to coordinating all their body parts well enough to develop. I mentioned when he was offered that he reminded me a little bit of Patrick Omameh, who has had a bit of a journeyman career so far in the NFL as an offensive guard. I think Irvin has the feet to play tackle or guard at the next level.

Michigan now has three commit in the 2018 class, where Irvin joins Ohioans Antwuan Johnson and Leonard Taylor. It’s very tentative, but Michigan is currently slated to be able to take 13 players in the 2018 class (LINK). He would also represent two straight years with commitments from the state of Georgia, adding to 2017 running back Kurt Taylor.

TTB Rating: I will not post a rating until the 2017 class wraps.

He played his sophomore year at a pretty light weight for a lineman …..

He’s a 2018 with two full years to grow. As an aside, i don’t think this kid is 6’4′ either, but he has plenty of time.

Liking this commitment much more after reading the scouting report. Hopefully we can hang onto him.
