Recruiting Update: December 2, 2015

December 2, 2015

Detroit (MI) King cornerback Lavert Hill

COMMITMENT
Houston (TX) Westside defensive tackle Jordan Elliott committed to Michigan (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Detroit (MI) King cornerback Lavert Hill decommitted from Penn State. Hill is a 5’11”, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, and UCLA, not to mention the in-state schools. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #11 cornerback, and #136 overall. Hill’s older brother is Michigan safety Delano Hill, and sources have been saying for months that it would just be a matter of time before Lavert flipped to Michigan. However, he is taking an official visit to Tennessee this coming weekend. He has visited Michigan numerous times and says he will announce at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Dade City (FL) Pasco cornerack Jayvaughn Myers decommitted from Florida. Myers is a 6’1″, 185 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, and Michigan, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #24 cornerback, and #258 overall. It’s unclear why Myers is decommitting from Florida with their defensive prowess, but he did recently pull in an offer from the Crimson Tide. Myers is the brother of 2016 prospect Nate Craig-Myers, the top wide receiver in the country.

Hit the jump for a new 2018 offer, some guys who committed elsewhere, and some random tidbits.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2018
Camp Hill (PA) Camp Hill tight end Zack Kuntz was offered by Michigan. Kuntz is a 6’7″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from Maryland, Penn State, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #1 tight end, and #17 overall. Kuntz is a teammate of 2016 quarterback Michael Shuster, who is committed to Michigan as a preferred walk-on. As a sophomore in 2015, Kuntz had 48 catches for 776 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 103 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks.

OFF THE BOARD
Durham (NC) Hillside running back Abdul Adams committed to Oklahoma. Adams was previously committed to Michigan State, and Michigan threw out an offer shortly after he decommitted from the Spartans. However, his second recruitment didn’t last long before he pledged to the Sooners.

Harbor City (CA) Narbonne offensive tackle Alex Akingbulu committed to UCLA. Akingbulu was originally very high on Michigan and even had the Wolverines in his top four a couple months ago. However, Michigan fell out of contention. He’s a teammate of 2016 wide receiver Devaughn Cooper (Arizona).

Salt Lake City (UT) Brighton Sione Heimuli-Lund, a 2017 prospect, committed to Stanford. From the alma mater of Michigan nose tackle Bryan Mone, Heimuli-Lund’s commitment to the Cardinal prevents Michigan from reeling in another Sione (Houma), which is disappointing.

MISCELLANEOUS
Here’s the monster visitors list from last weekend against Ohio State (LINK).

Detroit (MI) King wide receiver Donnie Corley has had his announcement date set for December 8, which is next Tuesday. He is expected to pick Michigan State.

Ann Arbor (MI) Skyline outside linebacker Daelin Hayes set his announcement date for December 10th. The former USC commit is expected to pick Notre Dame.

I kind of like saying Alex Akingbulu.

I looked at his vids again last night. The kid can run. I’d absolutely throw balls at him just to see if he can catch.

So I asked, and the answer won’t surprise. Everybody was afraid to go at him and went away.

So, I watched his vids. I like him, he is quick and routinely pulls away from kids that I guarantee you consider themselves to be fast. If he gets away, nobody makes up ground on him. He presses with enthusiasm, they put him on big physical receivers and he gets snarly. He has good hands and he doesn’t mind contact.

He makes some plays. This is a hi-lite reel so the ones where he get’s close but no cigar don’t appear, obviously. I’m takin him.

Thunder what are your predictions for LB’s in this class. It is an apparent area of need with all the players graduating this year. So far we have Johnson and Harding in the fold. I’m not including Reese because everyone thinks he’s as good as gone. Do you think we have a legitimate shot at any of the high level offers we have out there (Bush, Jackson, Jones or someone else)? Can you see anyone at anther position switching to LB? Thanks.

With the departure of D.J. Durkin, I don’t know how everything will play out. That was his position, and he was recruiting several of those guys. My guess is that his departure will hurt us with Dontavious Jackson. I think we’re in pretty good shape with Devin Bush, Jr. and Jonathan Jones. Whether we have a legit shot at Caleb Kelly is up in the air, because he was being recruited as a Buck linebacker, a position that may not exist for the next DC.

As far as position-switchers, I don’t see anyone who’s a candidate to switch except for Chase Winovich. Michigan might get some contributions from some walk-ons next year.
