Scouting Report: Cardale Jones, QB – Cleveland, OH

Scouting Report: Cardale Jones, QB – Cleveland, OH

May 7, 2010
Is it just me or does that football look tiny?

Height: 6’5″
Weight: 217 lbs.
Class: 2011
Position: Quarterback
School: Glenville High School in Cleveland, OH
40 Yard Dash: 4.93 (reported)
Vertical: 29″

Notes: Holds offers from Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Iowa, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State . . . Coached by Ted Ginn, Sr., a notoriously Ohio State-leaning coach . . . As a junior, completed 99/146 passes (67.8%) for 1,568 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions . . . As a junior, rushed for 264 yards on 56 carries (4.71 yards per carry) with 6 touchdowns . . . Wears jersey #10

Strengths: Stands tall in the pocket . . . Good play action fakes . . . Nice overhand delivery . . . Doesn’t let elbow drop, even on the run . . . Keeps eyes downfield when scrambling . . . Has nice touch . . . Puts a good arc on deep throws . . . Superb accuracy for a high school quarterback . . . Above average speed for a quarterback . . . Good elusiveness in pocket

Weaknesses: Carries the ball loosely when scrambling . . . Sloppy footwork from under center . . . Doesn’t have a rocket for an arm . . . Doesn’t have great speed for a running quarterback . . . Quick enough to get out of trouble; not quick enough to be a big play threat in the running game . . . Trusts his athleticism too much, which could make for a rough early transition to big-time college football

Projection: Jones is a BCS-level quarterback who needs a few years to develop. He could become a solid starter late in his career.

Reminds me of: a weaker armed, high school-age Jamarcus Russell

A damn shame Michigan won't get him. It'd be nice to have him and let him develop behind Gardner for a few years.

… Where is that coming from? OSU probably won't offer him unless Miller commits elsewhere, and the QB situation is no more appetizing at any of the other schools that have offered.

From what I've heard, OSU might offer him whether they get Miller or not. They see Jones as a good developmental prospect, and Miller isn't a shoo-in for OSU (Floriday might be a player in his recruitment, for one).

Hasn't Florida already taken a QB commit this year? Would they take another?

Florida has already taken Driskel, but they would make room for Miller if he wanted on board.

Besides, everybody knows Tedd Ginn Sr. won't let one of his players go to Michigan. He'd probably go to Iowa at worst.

Poor Magnus. Trying to argue logically with the arsewipes on MgBlog.

Wouldn't he be too slow for our version of the spread?

IMO, yes, Jones is too slow for Rodriguez's spread. It would be like recruiting Steve Threet – he can gain a few yards here and there, but he's not a consistent threat to make big plays.

Hey thunder I really love these scouting reports. Is there any way you could do something on Kent Turene? I know he doesn't have an offer yet, but I'd really like to read more on his strengths/weaknesses.

There are so many recruits to profile, I'm limiting my scouting reports to those who have been offered. Otherwise, I run the risk of wasting my time with players who might not ever have an opportunity to step inside Michigan Stadium.

Do you have any constructive criticism, or are you maybe just a Cardale Jones/Glenville fan who thinks Jones is going to be the next Heisman winner?
