2017 Season Countdown: #52 Sean McKeon

Today is Amazon Prime Day, so consider getting in on some deals through the link(s) here at TTB.

Name: Sean McKeon
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 240 lbs.
High school: Dudley (MA) Shepherd Hill
Position: Tight end
Class: Sophomore
Jersey number: #84
Last year: I ranked McKeon #71 and said he would be a backup tight end. He played in four games, making 2 catches for 10 yards.
TTB Rating: 77

McKeon didn’t contribute a ton to the team in 2016, so nobody would have batted an eyelash if he had redshirted. On the other hand, he earned some quietly rave reviews for his overall play. People within the program are excited for his future, even if he’s not a freak athlete. There seems to be a belief within Schembechler Hall that he will be a solid, old-school tight end by the time he’s done in Ann Arbor.

Michigan isn’t in strong need of contributions from McKeon this year, but he could be the Wolverines’ third tight end behind Ian Bunting and Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. Both of those players figure to play quite a bit in double tight end sets, and McKeon would likely be the next guy in due to injury or perhaps heavy packages. He’s a nice piece to have, since he has the skill set to play in-line tight end, play an H-back role, or split out. I look for his role to increase each year for the next couple seasons before settling in as a starting tight end.

Prediction: Backup tight end

2016 Season Countdown: #71 Sean McKeon

Name: Sean McKeon
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 240 lbs.
High school: Dudley (MA) Shepherd
Position: Tight end
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: #84
Last year: McKeon was a senior in high school (LINK). He caught 23 passes for 334 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Final TTB Rating:
77

McKeon was a pretty good tight end in Massachusetts, a place that isn’t known for football. He was in a run-heavy offense, so he didn’t get a lot of chances to shine. But at about 6’5″, 230 lbs., he could line up at tight end, wide receiver, defensive end, or outside linebacker and succeed. He enrolled early in January and looked pretty good, though not quite as smooth and athletic as some of the other options.

I dropped McKeon down from a TTB Rating of 83 to 77, mostly because of other tight ends who signed with Michigan in February. I think Devin Asiasi will probably play this fall, along with all the tight ends who return from last year. A.J. Williams graduated, but redshirt freshman Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. might fill that role as a blocking tight end. Toss in position changer Zach Gentry, and it’s a very crowded position. I don’t see much of a need for McKeon to play this fall, but he has a decent skill set, some spring experience, and a coaching staff dedicated to using a lot of tight ends.

Prediction: Backup tight end

Ford Field Open Practice: Offense, Injuries, Walk-ons

Wilton Speight 792x

Happy Easter Sunday, everybody! Along with a few thousand other fans, I made my way to Ford Field on Saturday. I sat in the stands, ate a hot dog, and watched Captain Khaki run practice. I chose not to live tweet it because, well, it was nice to sit back, relax, and watch a well run practice. Below are my thoughts on some roster news and the various positions:

ROSTER NEWS

  • WR/CB Freddy Canteen is not on the roster and his status is unclear.
  • WR Jehu Chesson was doing work on the sideline and on the bike, wearing a brace on his knee.
  • RB Kingston Davis was in shorts without a helmet and running steps. Lots and lots of steps.
  • OG David Dawson was wearing a sling on his left arm and did not participate.
  • CB Reon Dawson and WR Jaron Dukes have left the football program and are exploring medical scholarships.
  • DT Ryan Glasgow was in shorts and a helmet going through some non-contact drills, but then ran steps with Davis for a big chunk of practice.
  • RB Karan Higdon was in street clothes. No injury was apparent.
  • DE Shelton Johnson was not visible to me. I looked for him extensively and never saw him. Sam Webb tweeted that he was on the sideline in street clothes.

Hit the jump for a position-by-position breakdown of the offense.

Spring Football Preview: Tight Ends

Jake Butt 750x

Jake Butt

Projected starter: Senior Jake Butt. Butt (51 catches, 654 yards, 3 TDs) has been Michigan’s leading tight end for the past two seasons, and last year he was in the running for the Mackey Award, which is given to the nation’s top tight end. He should once again be in the running for the Mackey Award and an All-America nod.

Departures: A.J. Williams (12 catches, 129 yards), who was mainly a blocking tight end, graduated. Meanwhile, redshirt junior backup Khalid Hill is moving to fullback this spring (LINK) and redshirt sophomore Chase Winovich is moving back to linebacker after spending one season at fullback/tight end.

Hit the jump for more on the tight end situation.
