Name: Eddie McDoom
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 182 lbs.
High school: Winter Garden (FL) West Orange
Position: Wide receiver
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: #13
Last year: McDoom was a senior in high school (LINK). He caught 29 passes for 653 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Final TTB Rating: 89

I am pretty unabashed about my high hopes for McDoom, who not only has an awesome name, but can also play football pretty well. He originally committed to Oregon, even though I heard that Michigan was his leader. He then decommitted from the Ducks over the winter to flip to the Wolverines. In the meantime, he played in the Under Armour All-America Game, scoring a touchdown against other elite talents.

I’m only putting McDoom down at #60 because Michigan has some other talented receivers, many of whom are more experienced. The two primary guys are Jehu Chesson and Amara Darboh, but Grant Perry, Maurice Ways, and Drake Harris have also played a significant number of snaps. Add in the multiple-tight end sets and a large crew of incoming receivers, and the need for McDoom isn’t that great. Freshman receivers often contribute, and I think McDoom has the talent to do so. I think he could play in the slot, he’s a good route runner, and he might be able to help out on kickoff returns. But I think his chances to contribute will increase significantly in 2017, after Chesson and Darboh have moved on.

Prediction: Backup wide receiver

Poll results: Which 2016 signee will have the best career at wide receiver?

Ahmir Mitchell 817x

Ahmir Mitchell

A few weeks ago, I started a poll asking which class of 2016 signee would end up having the best career at receiver. Here are the results of the poll:

Ahmir Mitchell: 39%
The 6’3″, 205 lb. Mitchell was the only early enrollee of the bunch. While he did show off good size and athleticism this spring, he reportedly continued to have issues catching the ball. Braylon Edwards had the same problem early in his career, so that is not a death knell, but it will be something to watch.

Eddie McDoom: 25%
McDoom was a late pull after he flipped from Oregon to Michigan in January. The Florida native can play outside, in the slot, or as a returner. He was an Under Armour All-American.

Kekoa Crawford: 20%
The U.S. Army All-American played well at the all-star game and is the highest rated player of the bunch. Like McDoom, he could also play inside or outside.

Nate Johnson: 8%
The 5’11”, 175-pounder is a pure slot player who might be able to return punts, too. He’s the lowest rated player of the bunch at #589 overall in the 2016 class.

Chris Evans: 5%
Evans was ranked as a running back by some services, but his future position is unclear. He could play running back, receiver, or cornerback at the next level.

Brad Hawkins, Jr.: 3%
I wouldn’t pick Hawkins, either, but it’s interesting that he got 3% of the vote when Evans, McDoom, and Johnson were all rated lower by the recruiting services. The 6’1″, 202 lb. Hawkins could also end up at safety, which maybe factored into the voting.

What was your reasoning behind your voting?

Winter Garden (FL) West Orange wide receiver Eddie McDoom publicly committed to Michigan on Wednesday. He was previously committed to Oregon; he also had offers from Boston College, Clemson, Florida, Ohio State, South Carolina, and Texas, among others.

McDoom is listed by Rivals at 6’1″, 170 lbs., while other sites list him as short as 5’11”. Perhaps the 5’11” measurement is an old number, and perhaps the 6’1″ is your typical exaggeration. He claims a 4.65 forty. As a junior in 2014, he caught 47 passes for 854 yards and 15 touchdowns.

RATINGS
ESPN: 4-star, 82 grade, #23 WR, #184 overall
Rivals: 3-star, #75 WR
Scout: 3-star, #68 WR
247 Sports: 3-star, 88 grade, #67 WR, #416 overall

If I Had My Druthers . . . 2016 Wide Receivers

Mecole Hardman

This is the order in which I would rank the uncommitted wide receivers Michigan has offered. Star rankings don’t matter, the likelihood of a commit doesn’t matter, etc. These rankings are purely based on my ideal team:

1. Mecole Hardman – ATH – Elberton (GA) Elbert County:
Hardman isn’t a pure receiver. He might end up at cornerback at the next level, and he’s not very big at 5’10”, 171 lbs. If he were to get polished up as a receiver, though, he could be a big-time player. He also has value as a kickoff and punt returner.

2. Nate Craig-Myers – WR – Tampa (FL) Catholic:
There’s no question that Craig-Myers is big, strong, and fast at 6’2″, 210 lbs. and with a 4.4 forty. He could probably even play running back with his build. There have been some reported issues with drops and a lack of concentration at times, so he may not be a guy who can star right away in college. But with a year or two of development, he could round into a college standout.

3. Demetris Robertson – ATH – Savannah (GA) Christian:
Another player who could end up at a few different positions, Robertson is 6’0″, 172 lbs. He’s maybe not as shifty or agile as Hardman, but both are similar prospects with very good speed.

Hit the jump for the rest of the list.
