What’s the deal with: All these in-state offers?

Michigan has offered a bunch of new in-state players for the 2019 and 2020 classes, and it seems out of character for the Wolverines, especially for Jim Harbaugh’s staff. There have been rumors that Harbaugh (and others within the program) have realized that their recruiting in 2018 has not been up to snuff, and there have been complaints for several years that Harbaugh was ignoring the midwest – particularly Ohio – in favor of spending a lot of time recruiting Florida, California, Texas, Alabama, etc., which are more difficult to recruit, for obvious geographical reasons, along with some other reasons.

First, here’s a look at the numbers, from Brady Hoke’s final full class through 2021 so far:

If you’re looking for updates on Michigan’s defensive recruiting in the 2019 class, check out last week’s post here (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2019

Tampa (FL) Catholic wide receiver Ahmarean Brown was offered by Michigan. He’s a 3-star, the #68 wide receiver, and #519 overall. He has offers from Alabama, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia, among others.

Buford (GA) Buford offensive tackle Carter Colquitt was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’6″, 295 lb. prospect with offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #72 offensive tackle, and #738 overall. Colquitt is the teammate of 2018 Michigan running back signee Christian Turner.

Hollywood (FL) Chaminade-Madonna wide receiver John Dunmore decommitted from Florida. He’s a 6’2″, 172 lb. prospect with other offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon, among others. He decommitted from the Gators just a few days after receiving the offer from Michigan, and he seems very interested in the Wolverines. He’s a 4-star, the #28 wide receiver, and #151 overall.

Hit the jump for a bunch more offers.

2018

Tariq Reid – RB – Davison (MI) Davison: Reid is a 5’10”, 205 lb. prospect who is committed to Grand Valley State University. He’s a 247 Sports 2-star, the #159 running back, and #2589 overall. He has been offered a preferred walk-on spot at Michigan. As a senior in 2017, Reid ran 141 times for 1,149 yards and 12 touchdowns.

2019

Adam Berghorst – DE – Zeeland (MI) East: Berghorst is a 6’7″, 245 lb. prospect with offers from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Michigan State, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star, the #38 strongside end, and #469 overall. His brother, Johnathan Berghorst, just finished his freshman year as a defensive end at Central Michigan. Adam Berghorst also visited Michigan last weekend.

Marcel Lewis – LB – Clinton Township (MI) Chippewa Valley: Lewis is a 6’1″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, and Purdue, among others. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star, the #17 inside linebacker, and #519 overall. This is his first visit to Michigan as an offered prospect.

Nolan Rumler – OG – Akron (OH) Hoban: Rumler is committed to Michigan (LINK).

Mazi Smith – DT – Kentwood (MI) East Kentwood: Smith is a 6’3″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #8 defensive tackle, and #120 overall. While Notre Dame has 50% of the Crystal Ball picks right now, I’ve heard Michigan is the leader for him.

Paul Tyson – QB – Trussville (AL) Hewitt Trussville: Tyson is a 6’4″, 210 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, and USC, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #6 pro-style quarterback, and #293 overall. He was offered by Pep Hamilton on Wednesday and plans to visit this weekend. As a junior in 2017, he threw for 3,392 yards and 36 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. As an Alabama native, right now 100% of the Crystal Ball picks are in favor of the Crimson Tide.

2020

Caden Clark – TE – Akron (OH) Hoban: Clark is a 6’4″, 241 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, West Virginia . . . and now Michigan, who offered during his visit. Clark is a teammate of Rumler (see above).

Justin Rogers – OG – Oak Park (MI) Oak Park: Rogers is a 6’2″, 289 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona and Ohio State, along with several others. He picked up an offer from Michigan on this weekend’s visit.

DeaMonte Trayanum – LB – Akron (OH) Hoban: Trayanum is a 6’0″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and West Virginia. He’s another teammate of Rumler (see above).

Michigan has thrown out more than 25 offers since my last update, so I’m breaking it down to separate offense and defense posts. As of this writing on Wednesday night, Michigan has offered 197 players in the 2019 class.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2019

Oklahoma City (OK) Putnam City defensive end Collin Clay was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 235 lb. prospect with offers from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, and Oklahoma State, among others. The Sooners have not offered yet, but they are considered to be his favorite. He’s a 3-star, the #37 strongside end, and #534 overall. He made 56 tackles and 3 sacks as a junior in 2017.

Charlotte (NC) Providence Day School linebacker Osita Ekwonu was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 220 lb. prospect with offers from Duke, North Carolina, Ohio State, and Penn State. He’s likely and inside linebacker prospect at the next level.

Washington (DC) St. John’s cornerback Aman Greenwood was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Boston College, North Carolina, and Pitt, among others. Greenwood is a teammate of 2018 quarterback and Michigan commit Kevin Doyle.

Hit the jump for several more new offers on the defensive side of the ball.

2019 Recruiting Update: January 23, 2018

Clinton Township (MI) Chippewa Valley LB Marcel Lewis (image via MLive)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2019

Belleville (MI) Belleville cornerback Julian Barnett, a Michigan State commit, was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’1″, 186-pounder who claims a 4.41 forty, along with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others. Barnett could play corner or wide receiver at the next level. There has been much consternation from Michigan fans about why the Wolverines hadn’t offered earlier, and the pursuit has unfortunately begun after he committed to MSU in late December.

Lakeville (MN) North offensive tackle Bryce Benhart was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’7″, 285 lb. prospect with offers from Minnesota, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Wisconsin, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #43 offensive tackle, and #381 overall. The early expectation is that he will end up at Wisconsin.

Buford (GA) Buford running back Derrian Brown was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’11”, 174 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #13 running back, and #143 overall. Brown is a teammate of 2018 Michigan signee Christian Turner, which is quite a one-two punch in the backfield.

Hit the jump for a bunch of other new offers.
