Citrus Bowl Preview: Last Time They Played…

Yesterday I posted some roster notes on Alabama (LINK).

For the 2012 season opener, Michigan scheduled a game with Alabama at Jerryworld, a neutral-site location. At that point Alabama had won 2 of the previous 3 national championships, including the previous season’s. Meanwhile, Michigan was coming off of an 11-2 season and a win in the Sugar Bowl over Virginia Tech.

• Alabama was up 21-0 at the end of the 1st quarter and 31-0 in the 2nd quarter before a Denard Robinson TD made it 31-7 at halftime.
• Michigan would go on to lose, 41-14.
• Alabama QB A.J. McCarron finished 11/21 for 199 yards and 2 TD.
• Alabama RB T.J. Yeldon ran 11 times for 111 yards and 1 TD.
• Devin Gardner started at wide receiver (1 catch, 44 yards, 1 TD).
• Jeremy Gallon caught 4 passes for 107 yards.
• After Robinson got injured, #2 quarterback Russell Bellomy came in to go 0/1 with 1 INT.

Michigan is 2-2 all-time against Alabama, with wins coming in 1988 and 2000, as well as losses coming in 1997 and 2012. All previous meetings other than 2012 have taken place in bowl games.

The All-Rodriguez Team: Offense

Denard Robinson makes fatties look fat.

In case you can’t tell, I like to make lists.  And depth charts.  And lineups.  This has nothing to do with football.  But when I was about thirteen years old, I laid down in my living room with a piece of paper and a pen.  I wrote down a batting order for my favorite team, the Detroit Tigers.  And the Atlanta Braves.  And the Chicago Cubs.  And, what the hell, the rest of Major League Baseball, too.

From memory.  If you wanted to know the emergency catcher for the Montreal Expos, I was your man (er, well, boy).

So here’s another list.  I’ve often thought about the best players to come through Michigan during the years of my fanaticism, and this one is narrowed down to the Rodriguez years.  Which players in the past few years turned out the best seasons for what amounted to be Michigan’s worst three consecutive years in program history?  Despite the 15-22 record over Rodriguez’s tenure, we had some pretty good individual players.  But as you might expect, the majority of them (nine out of eleven) were on the 2010 squad that had a winning record and played in a bowl game.

182-for-291 passing, 2570 yards, 18 touchdowns, 11 interceptions
256 carries, 1799 yards, 14 touchdowns
This is a no-brainer.  For half the season, he was on pace to win the Heisman.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: De’Veon Smith

Surprise, surprise! Orlando Apollos running back De’Veon Smith wins the award again after helping achieve a 34-31 victory over the Memphis Express. Smith had 10 carries for 27 yards (2.7 YPC), including a game-winning 1-yard touchdown run with 1:51 left in the contest.

HONORABLE MENTION

• Matt Godin, DL (San Antonio Commanders): Godin made 2 tackles in a 23-6 loss to the Arizona Hotshots.
• Ty Isaac, RB (Birmingham Iron): Isaac was a scratch.
• Denard Robinson, RB (Atlanta Legends): Robinson had 1 carry for 1 yard in a 17-9 loss to the Birmingham Iron.
• Channing Stribling, CB (Memphis Express): Stribling made 1 tackle in the 34-31 loss to the Apollos.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: De’Veon Smith

Smith is making this pretty much a one-man race during the AAF season. The Orlando Apollos’ De’Veon Smith ran 13 times for 40 yards (3.1 YPC) and 3 touchdowns (1 yard, 1 yard, 4 yards) and 1 catch for 0 yards. The Apollos won over the Atlanta Legends, 36-6.

• Channing Stribling, CB (Memphis Express): Stribling made 2 tackles in a 31-25 win over the Birmingham Iron.
